Dating Coaching: How Can It Help You?

Monday, April 28th, 2008

By Gayle Crist When I was divorced in 1995 at age 41 and decided to start dating again, I wish I knew there was such a thing as a dating coach! After 16 years married to the same man and only four significant relationships before marriage, I was not too savvy about dating in general. And I was totally clueless about dating etiquette in the 90s, who might be a good partner for me at this stage of my life, and places where a single mother of two could meet someone whod be interested in her. I couldve used some guidance from someone with experience in navigating the over-40 dating worldwhich is why, after I remarried, I decided to become a coach and help people in that very same boat! A dating coach is a personal life coach whose main niche is helping you find the love of your life. Rather than a matchmaker, shes someone who helps you find and navigate various avenues for meeting other single people, prepare yourself for having a relationship by getting healthier emotionally and being who you want to attract, and clarify your vision of a compatible partnerso you can more easily spot that person when he/she arrives. The various avenues for meeting can include online dating, speed dating, singles groups, regional singles events, and dating services. The coach has researched and/or personally experienced good examples of each of these in your area, so she can provide information for you to use in making informed decisions about the best dating options to try. An online dating coach helps you write effective, results-oriented online profiles; choose the most appropriate dating sites for finding your type of person; draft your initial e-mails to prospects; and rethink your choice of sites if youre not getting the results you want. She also helps you stay upbeat and motivated if you get discouraged in yoursearch and to believe in yourself when you lose confidence. In the area of confidence, a dating coach helps you see yourself as a great catch and reminds you of that whenever disappointments get you down. Youll always have more success in attracting dates when youre feeling good about yourself, so your coach makes sure you do. She reminds you of your assets at every opportunity and is your biggest cheerleader every step of the way. She helps you plan and stick to action steps you name as you work toward your goal of finding a partner. She wants you to succeed in that quest as much as you do! In my case, Im so happy in my new marriage that I want everyone else to be this happy too, and I LOVE helping people find what I have by avoiding the mistakes I made along the way. In short, dating coaching can help save you time, money and aggravation along the road to love. Youll have the moral support you want and need to keep going as you navigate the ups and downs and natural cycles of learning more about yourself and what kind of relationship is best for you at whatever dating stage youre at. A Point in Every Direction is the Same As No Point At All

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

By Kim A. Castle Ever try to be something for everyone and find no one wants it? Do you have trouble finding the time to focus on your business? Do you do so much for so many that you find it’s difficult to make any financial progress in your business; much less make an indelible mark in the mind of your potential customers? I found myself on that road so many times, that I could be a tour guide for Please-want-me-ville. Where did this come from and how can you get it to stop? It starts publicly when we’re very young… at school. A moment emblazoned in my mind was in Mrs. Moon’s kindergarten class. I had just discovered a squirreled stash of my favorite food, Pepperidge Farms Goldfish Crackers, in the front pocket of my patchwork dress. I squealed with delight and proudly started munching on them in the middle of “two plus three”. My delight turned to horror when I heard, “Miss Castle, I hope you have enough for everyone or you will stand in the front of the class with your face in the corner!” Out of nowhere, large beads of sweat developed on my forehead as I desperately searched every inch of my two-inch square pocket for enough goldfish to feed the entire class. Even though we were only on “addition”, somehow I knew that four fishes and a tail wouldn’t cut it. With my face in the corner for those very long twenty minutes, I vowed that I would always have enough to make everyone happy. In business, these fish have come back to bite me over and over again; until I started teaching people how to brand. Now they can ‘gold-fish’ for themselves. As a teenager, I developed ‘I don’t have enough friends’ syndrome. Not being one of the ‘cool-n-popular’ types, I had to buy my friends (I hope I’m not the only one who did this). And since I wasn’t the brain, I couldn’t find my value in helping friends get “A’s. I did everything else: the grunt work, the labor, the runs to the store, the ‘kill-the messenger’ calls, the kind of stuff that took me away from most of the ‘friend’ action. I did so much that I had no time to develop the relationships that I wanted in the first place. I was spread so thin… I was transparent! No wonder for the first few years of my business, I worked unbelievably hard but had nothing (no money, no value) to show for it. It wasn’t until I turned my focus inward that I really started to build something of value that customers wanted. A few dictionary definitions of focus: 1. concentrated effort or attention on a particular thing 2. a concentrated and unified quality 3. the quality of being sharply defined with clear edges and contrast A few dictionary definitions of inward: 1. situated within something 2. relating to or existing in the mind or spirit 3. toward the inside or center of something Your business can never be developed as a brand until you first: a) suspend the need to be something for everyone, and b) sharply define with clear edges from your inside or center The challenge to our business success grows when we compound these learned behaviors with the entrepreneurial fear that we need to be attractive to e-v-e-r-y-o-n-e in order to survive. Especially because we don’t know when and from where the next customer will come. I’ve done that dance too. (You know, the one when you get off the phone with a new client closing a “new tiny project that feels huge because it’s the only one you have ‘dance’). If you identify at all with this, how’s it working for you? For me it didn’t! Nothing did until I: 1) deeply connected to what I offered, found my uniqueness in it and built on the internal power of it (the first part of the BrandU process), and 2) communicated it consistently with precision and quality (the second part of the BrandU process known as CLICsm). The points of effort that you are sending out in every direction - squandering your focus externally, trying to be something for everyone, doing so much that results so little - all start from somewhere. That somewhere is a place that you control. The seeds of your brand are planted there. Don’t be affected by your programming, program your success. I promise you that if plant it there and tend it, it will grow, and grow, and… grow! And you will be filled with joy and financial success, and the freedom to enjoy it. 2003 Castle Montone, Limited All Rights Reserved. The Plant Philanthropist

Friday, April 25th, 2008

By Kenneth C. Hoffman One year after we moved into our new ranch-style home, the Merion Bluegrass lawn was growing well and the basic flower beds were mapped out. A new home doesn’t need repairs, but a myriad of needs kept cropping up to soak up any available money. A trip to the local plant nursery put us in shock when we added up the cost of perennials, mulching and proper bricks for the borders. I would search the want ads for bargain lots of building materials, garden tools, mowers and fertilizer with much success. When people move, they don’t want to weigh down the moving van with old tools and bags of fertilizer. They practically give them away. The one thing people would never part with are their perennials. Plants and trees are quite visible to the new owners and they usually expect that they go with the house. My whole winter was spent browsing the catalogs for hosta, iris, roses, and especially day lilies. Available in mouth-watering shades, these new hybrid day lilies come in different heights and plant habit. Some are good for along a fence, other make good border plants, each clump doubling in size every year. Unlike the road side day lilies that grow to four feet tall, bloom only briefly, and send out root runners to take over the rest of the garden, the hybrids are garden friendly. Unfortunately, a grouping of three roots cost about eight dollars, sending the cost of the needed plants into the hundreds of dollars. One day, in a conversation with a local nursery owner, he revealed the source of some of his day lilies. The farmer lived in a nearby town and grew day lilies for a living. Some intense research turned up his address and I paid him a visit. Presented with row upon row of cultivated day lilies in every imaginable shape and color, I drooled over owning just a few of them for our garden. I parted with all the money I had, fifteen dollars, and went home with three starter clumps. Before leaving, I took a few pictures of his fields and some individual blossoms he had self propagated. I later made a set for him to keep. One low growing beauty sported forty blooms on each stalk (opening one per day) in tones of deep ruby red. Another met the dawn in diamond dusted five-inch-wide flowers in ivory and shell pink, showing an apple green center. A third boasted four inch blooms in a true lemon yellow. The following summer, I received a call from the farmer. He informed me that he had sold his farm land to a developer and had already bought ten acres twenty miles further west. He had removed all he needed to seed the new day lily farm but was forced to leave hundreds of mature plants. The bulldozers were slated to start preparing the land for the new development the following week and if I would like, I could help myself to any number of plants for my garden. I almost dropped the phone in excitement. Here was presented to me the most desirable flowering perennials I could dream of for our garden! Free!! I thanked him and spent the next three days digging, boxing, and transporting the day lilies. The next July Fourth we had a barbecue party in the back yard. Ringing the gentle curves of the brick borders bloomed forty varieties of hybrid day lilies, glorifying our new garden and warming our hearts. Retired portrait photographer now lives in a townhouse. How to Care for Long Stem Roses

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

By Ken Austin Widely considered to be the most popular roses for all occasions, what many people think of as classic long stem roses are in fact Hybrid Teas. A mixture between the Hybrid Perpetual and Tea Rose from China, these long stem beauties have long pointy buds with up to 30-50 petals per bloom. Since the first discovered Hybrid Tea in 1867, there has been an explosion leading to thousands of long stem varieties coming in virtually every color except for blue or black. These long stem roses tend to flower continuously and can grow 2-6 feet tall. High susceptibility to disease and less fragrant smell, when compared to other types of roses, is often attributed to the great deal of inbreeding that has taken place to achieve the attractiveness of long stem roses. Keep your long stem roses growing tall When planting your long stem roses, be sure to select an area where they will get 6 hours of sunlight and good air circulation. Do hard pruning in the late winter or early spring just as new growth begins. Remove old damaged canes from the center to let in fresh air and sunlight, leaving the thick healthy ones forming a circle on the outside. Cut the remaining stems to 12-24 inches and fertilize in a few weeks time. To protect during harsh winters, tie the canes together and mound with soil. Surround the mound with insulating materials such as leaves or straw and shelter with a cylinder, perforated with breathing holes. Adopt a regular spray program to protect the roses and their leaves from disease. And, don’t forget to give your long stem roses lots of water! Passionate Eating

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

By Annette Colby Food is an important part of a balanced diet. Fran Lebowitz The Iranian movie, The Fish Fall In Love is a film that speaks of eating and falling in love. It is based on the premise that people fall into two categories; some that eat their food with no passion and the others who eat passionately, the second group are successful in love. Are you madly in love with luscious food, taking the time to fill your senses with the delicious aroma of food? When was the last time you sat down and ate with passion, without feeling bad by thinking about calories, fat, or whats healthy and unhealthy? Imagine savoring the joy of eating the smell, visual appeal, taste and texture and being alive during each bite. Truly experiencing food is one of the great joys in life. This week, challenge yourself to one meal that you will eat passionately and with a sense of aliveness. Put away, for one meal, all concerns about gaining or losing weight. Let there be no counting calories, and no following strict food rules. Take a moment and imagine this to be a meal of complete freedom, joy, and passion. Close your eyes for a moment and breathe in deeply. Relax. Imagine what your ideal meal would be. Really let yourself go. Is your ideal meal something your mom made for you as a child? Or something you had in a restaurant once? Is there an appetizer, salad, main course, a favorite drink, coffee and dessert? Or just a few special foods? Allow the colors and arrangement of the food to come into mind. If several things seem appealing, or if no particular foods suggest themselves, ask yourself about the qualities of what will satisfy your hunger: Texture (crunchy? smooth? chewy?), temperature (hot? warm? cool? cold?), density (heavy? light?), taste (sweet? sour? bitter? salty?), and so on. What meal or combination of foods would let your taste buds soar, your body melt with pleasure, and your mind feel the exhilaration of joy? When you have identified a specific meal, open your eyes and write down your menu. Will you follow through and allow yourself the experience of creating this loving experience for yourself? Notice any objections you feel about doing this: * This is stupid. * This sounds good, but I dont have the time. * Whats the point? * If I enjoy the food, I wont be able to stop eating. * I get bored paying attention to the meal. * I dont want to be aware of eating, its embarrassing. * I dont want to give up the numbing out experience of eating. The Experience Find out what it might be like to bring back the joyfulness of eating. Imagine preparing for this meal for a friend or lover that you had not seen in quite some time. Have fun planning the details and anticipating with excitement how the meal will flow. What details would make this meal absolutely perfect? Is this a meal you can prepare at home? Do you need to call your mom or relative and get the recipe? Now pick a date that you are willing to cook for yourself. Yes, you read that last sentence correctly. It did mention the words cook and for yourself. However, were only talking one meal. And, theres no need to do this by yourself. Unless of course you want to. Enlist the enthusiasm of your very best friend or the support of your partner. Explain the purpose of your meal is to savor and enjoy the entire process of eating. Shopping You don’t have to cook fancy or complicated masterpieces just good food from fresh ingredients. ~ Julia Child ~ Get a shopping list together of the items you will need. For this one meal, choose beautiful, fresh ingredients. Pick foods that are alive and full of vitality. How about adding a few other items to your list? Maybe indulging in a fine bottle of wine, or special expensive imported water? Splurge for this meal. Its okay if you only have one glass of the wine and end up throwing three quarters of the bottle away. No one will tell your mother that youve been wasteful. Go ahead, live on the edge. Indulge. While youre out shopping, remember the fresh flowers, candles, and maybe even a setting of special original china. Preparing Enchant, stay beautiful and graceful, but do this, eat well. Bring the same consideration to the preparation of your food as you devote to your appearance. Let your dinner be a poem, like your dress. Letters to Emily Charles Pierre Monselet, French journalist and author. (1825-1888) Cooking may not be an activity youve done lately. It takes a little time to prepare a meal. So plan ahead, invite your friend or partner, and approach this act with love and anticipation. Begin the process of cooking with awareness. Notice the colors of the vegetables you chose. Hear the sounds of them being chopped, and the sizzle as they saute. Deeply inhale the aromas as they begin to fill your kitchen. Maximize your anticipation by looking at, touching, and smelling the food as you chop, cut, arrange ingredients. The Environment Create a memory for this meal. Choose a place to eat that is peaceful, attractive, and pleases you. Let your heart choose a special cloth or scarf for the table. Arrange beautiful, living flowers in the center of the table or sprinkle rose petals around the dinner setting. Dim the lights and light the candles. Create atmosphere by listening to calming, relaxing music such as ocean waves, babbling brooks, nature sounds in the background. It might help to break the routine of how you eat by using chopsticks or no utensils at all. Use your best china and arrange the food on your plate as though for a guest. Eat with Passion This meal you will eat with passion. It will be a sensual and delightfully sacred experience. The food is a gentle lover that has come to take care of you, to soothe and nurture you. Eating will be an entire body and sensory experience, not just putting food in your mouth and swallowing. Notice the steam arising with the scent of the wonderful food you are about to eat. Inhale deeply. Smell the aromas and feel them as they move throughout your entire body. Delight in the experience. Now close your eyes and slowly take a bite. Allow the bite to stay in your mouth for a moment to fully appreciate the taste before you even begin chewing. Find yourself worthy of receiving pleasure that isnt guilt ridden or secret. Allow appreciation of the food to comfort your soul and regenerate your body. Body Awareness Before you eat, notice how it feels to be hungry. Notice your body sensations as you become filled by the food you eat. Become conscious of your whole body. Are your muscles tense anywhere? Notice how you are sitting, and what you are thinking. Are you thinking of the sensations of the food you are eating, or have other thoughts intruded? Gently bring your attention back and breathe deeply. Be aware of your body’s signal when it has had enough to eat. Not sure when youve had enough? Listen to your body. Perhaps one more bite will establish the sense of satisfaction? Or take a good long look at the remaining food does it look the same as when you started? Does it taste the same as when you started? Meal Ending Take a deep breath and allow yourself to have this food inside of you. Say yes your fullness and your participation in a joyful experience. Blow out the candles to symbolically end your meal. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Helping people let go of self-destructive thoughts, emotions, and behaviors has been the life work of Dr. Annette Colby. Mark of the Beast Revealed

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

By Debra Lohrere Amid the vast array of symbols in the book of Revelation there is a severe warning relating to anyone who takes the Mark of the Beast. Revelation 14:9-11 And the third angel followed them, saying with a loud voice, If any man worship the beast and his image, and receive his mark in his forehead, or in his hand, The same shall drink of the wine of the wrath of God, which is poured out without mixture into the cup of his indignation; and he shall be tormented with fire and brimstone in the presence of the holy angels, and in the presence of the Lamb: And the smoke of their torment ascendeth up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day nor night, who worship the beast and his image, and whosoever receiveth the mark of his name. You will notice from this text that there is more than just taking the mark. It also refers to worshiping the beast or his image or receiving the mark of his name. There has been a lot of speculation about the mark of the beast and whether it will be a computer chip implanted under the skin, or a bar code or some sort of tattoo. These ideas revolve around the concept that whoever does not receive the Mark of the Beast will not be able to buy or sell, so therefore it has to be something that will be used to track those who pledge allegiance to the beast. There is a hole in this theory however, because even though some sort of technology may play a part in the prevention of commerce, there is more to the mark than just the buying and selling issue. As you can see from the verse above, the real issue with taking the mark, worshiping the beast or his image or receiving the mark of his name, is that it will doom you to eternal damnation. The spiritual aspect of the mark, is also highlighted by the fact that everyone gets a mark, not just those who worship the beast, the true believers are also marked, Revelation 7:3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. Also the distinction between those who take the mark of the beast and those who get the seal or mark of God is shown to be directly related to obedience to the Ten Commandments. Straight after the warning about not taking the mark of the beast it shows the difference. Revelation 14:12 Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. The mark of the beast will not be obvious, because it will deceive many. Revelation 19:20 And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. All of the symbols used in Revelation are explained elsewhere in the Bible, for instance a Beast represents a kingdom or a political or religious power. Daniel 7:23 Thus he said, The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth, which shall be diverse from all kingdoms, and shall devour the whole earth, and shall tread it down, and break it in pieces. Therefore the beast described in Revelation 13:1, which also correlates to the fourth beast of Daniel 7 relates to an apostate religious system, one that blasphemes God, puts the rules of men above the Word of God, and one that claims to have the authority of God on earth. All of the early Protestant reformers clearly identified the first antichrist beast of Revelation to be none other than the false system of religion, and persecuting power found within the Roman Catholic Church. During the dark ages millions of people were tortured and killed as heretics for not bowing down to all of the precepts the church. The Catholic Church say that the mark of their authority, is the fact that without scriptural support they changed the Seventh Day Sabbath of God to Sunday. Therefore, by their own admission, Sunday keeping (which is worshiping on a counterfeit day of worship, on the day that the pagans worship the Sun god) is the Mark of the Beast. Note again that those who are saved and sealed by the angels are those that obey the Ten Commandments and that the seal (Name, Title and Realm) of God is listed in His fourth commandment, the one the Catholic Church changed. Exodus 20:10 11 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. This shows that God (name) is the Creator (title) of Heaven and earth (realm). Career Burnout And How To Resolve It

Friday, April 11th, 2008

By Liselotte Molander Sarah is a highly effective, multitasking business professional with a strong passion for her work. She is also a loving and caring mother of three kids. Sarah is happily married to an equally busy man. They have lots of friends and an active life outside work. It sounds too good to be true! How does she manage? Some years ago Sarah was overwhelmed, frustrated, constantly tired and ready to stop her professional dreams. She worked over 60 hours per week, and tried desperately to catch up with dead lines and projects, meetings blended with business travel. She had difficulties to deliver in time, her occupational stress level was high and her job motivation was low. Sarahs performance declined. Her life was going in a downward, steep spiral. She was close to loosing her job, and to get a divorce, all at the same time, and she felt miserable. Sarah didnt want to give up. She understood she needed help to sort out the different parts in her life. She learned the 3 key secrets to how to solve career burnout: Secret #1: Sarah started with herself. By identifying her life goals and how she wanted to live her life she got a much clearer picture of her values and what was important to her. She focused on what was fun, and how she felt when she engaged in different tasks. Things that didnt feel good, she decided to delegate. She got clear in her strength and her true brilliance and when she incorporated that into her daily activities, life and work immediately started to go smoother. Secret #2: Living authentically is important to Sarah and she learned the keys to authentic communications, where there is no room for blame and conflicts. This had an impact in her professional life, as well as her private life. When she could communicate with her colleagues and team what she expected, and together they build their vision around the work to be done, the whole team got new energy and could perform from a higher level. Secret #3: Sarah decided that all parts of her were important. If she didnt feel good and was happy with her life, she decided that her family and children would suffer as well. Once she had the basic foundation laid (step 1 and 2) it was time for her to take care of herself, and her own personal and spiritual development. She decided to focus only on doing things that she really enjoyed doing, and the things she was a genius at. Once she got going her brilliance accelerated and not only is she reaping career success, she also has more money she could dream of. The journey was not on a highway, it was more on a bumpy road. Sarah decided that SHE was important and that she wanted to take charge over her life and career. Sarah decided she needed support, and not from anyone in the close family. Spearfishing Equipment

Thursday, April 10th, 2008

By Sarah Freeland Are you a certified scuba diver? Are you planning to fish in waters where spearfishing is permitted? It offers a new dimension to your fishing experience! In terms of spearfishing equipment, youll need a snorkel, fins, mask, and a regulator. Youll choose your spear gun and polespears specifically for what you want to accomplish on your fishing trip. If youre going out between fall and spring, then a wetsuit is a good idea. When the air temperature drops to 76 degrees, and the water temperature to 79, consider a shorty wetsuit; and when the air temperature drops to 72 degrees, and the water temperature below 75, then consider a full 6 mm wetsuit. In the right hands, polespears can be highly effective. Even though theyre usually used for small reef fish, you can turn them just as handily to halibut, seephead, or striped bassjust about any medium to large fish. Polespears are frequently made of fiberglass, aluminum, or carbon compounds for lightness and flex. They come in different sizes for different uses, usually varying between 5 and 8 feet in length. Want to use a polespear effectively? Relax, and stay still in the water. Hold your breath until the fish comes in range. Are you thinking of spearfishing for striped bass? This is one of New Englands most sought-after fish. Youll need a mask and snorkel, as well as your gun. Because of the low visibilityeven at shallow depthsin the waters that striped bass prefer, choose a reduced volume bask with a large field of vision and non-tinted glass. Choose a simple J type snorkel, and dont worry about special devices. Choose a 75-cm. light gun, so that you can change power readily for different prey. If youre out after big fish, then bring some spare shafts. You really dont need a reel, but it might be nice to have if youre after big fish or dive deep for security. Tomatoes: History, Origin, Facts… or Fiction?

Monday, April 7th, 2008

By Kirk Gordon A tomato importer, John Nix, decided to challenge the law after scrutinizing the Tariff Act. His case relied on the fact that tomatoes were a fruit and not vegetable, therefore, it should not be subjected to the Tariff Act. Nix’s objections brought the case to the Supreme Court in 1893. Although Nix had a solid case, the Supreme Court rejected the botanical facts and continued to refer to tomatoes as a vegetable. Plant family Tomatoes belong to the genus Lycopersicon, while potatoes belong to the genus Solanum; Both of which belongs to the same “flowering plant family” solanaceae. The similarities in leaves and flowers justifies this taxonomic grouping. The UK - Introduction of the tomato When the tomato plant was first introduced into the UK, some areas were not willing to consume the fruit because they were considered poisonous. Other plants that were poisonous, and in the same family as the tomato, such as the henbane, mandrake and the deadly nightshade were reasons to be concerned. The deadly nightshade (Atropus belladonna), in particular, resembled the tomato plant the most, and was used as a hallucinogenic drug, as well as for cosmetic purposes in various parts of Europe. In Latin, the name “belladonna”; literally means “beautiful woman.” The women in medieval courts would apply drop of deadly nightshade extract to their eyes, dilating their pupils, a fashionable statement at the time. When the deadly nightshade was taken for it’s hallucinogenic properties, the consumer would experience visuals and a feeling of flying or weightlessness. German folklore suggests it was also used in witchcraft to evoke werewolves, a practice know as lycanthropy. The common name for tomatoes in Germany translates to “Wolf peach,” which was simply another reason for Europeans to avoid the plant. North America - Introduction of the tomato Tomato plants were transported by colonists from Britain to North America. The plants were most valued for removing pustule (Pimples, Blisters - Pus filled, inflamed skin). The inventor of peanut butter, George Washington Carver, strongly urged his poor Alabama neighbors to consume tomatoes because of their unhealthy diet. However, he had little success convincing them that the plants was edible. Early efforts by merchants to sell tomatoes were not very successful. It is said that the fruit was brought to the liberal hamlet of Salem, Mass. in 1802 by a painter who also found it difficult persuading people to try the fruit. New Orleans cuisine was reported to have used tomatoes by 1812, however, doubts about the fruit lingered in some areas. It’s thought that doubts about the plant’s edibility was laid to rest, when Colonel Robert Gibbon Johnson announced that he will consume a bushel of tomatoes in front of the Boston courthouse at noon on September 26, 1820. Thousands of spectators turned out to watch the man commit suicide (At least, so they thought) by consuming the poisonous fruit. It is said that spectators were shocked when they realized the Colonel will survive after consuming numerous tomatoes. This story is from an old farm journal and may not be very reliable, however, it’s quite entertaining. Tomato popularity on the rise Throughout the western world, tomatoes began to grow in popularity. In the 1820s, several cookbooks included recipes which required or called for tomatoes. Tomatoes were sold by the dozens in Boston’s Quincy Market in 1835. In Thomas Bridgeman seed catalogue, 4 varieties of tomatoes were listed: Cherry, Pear, Large Yellow and Large Squash. Bruist, a seed merchant commented on the tomato in 1858 - “In taking retrospect of the last eighteen years, there is no vegetable on the catalogue that has obtained such popularity in so short a period as the one now under consideration. In 1828-29, it was almost detested; in ten years almost every variety of pill and panacea was extract of tomato. It now occupies as great a surface of ground as cabbage, and is cultivated the length and breadth of the country.” - www.heirloomseeds.com That year, Bruits had eight cultivatars listed in his catalogue. A few years later, in 1863, a popular seed catalogue had 23 cultivars listed. One of the listed cultivars was Trophy, the first modern-looking, large, red, smooth-skinned variety which was sold for $5.00 for a packet of 20 seeds. Large scale breeding for desirable traits became common in the 1870s in both the US and UK. In fact, by the 1880s several hundred cultivars had been named and it was clear that tomato had grown on the western culture. According to a study conducted at Michigan Agricultural College in the late 1880s, 171 of the named cultivars represented only 61 truly unique varieties, many of which were only marginally different. Heirloom varieties Although Central American is thought to be the center of domestication, throughout Europe and later in North America, further domestication occurred on a more intense level. Eastern Europe appeared to produce large numbers of high quality varieties. Tomatoes are self-pollinating plants which tend to become genetically homozygous after many generations. Tomatoes will rarely cross breed and usually produce plants will similar characteristics as the parents. Because of tomatoes natural breeding process, early cultivars did not change much and were kept in a family or community for a long time, hence the name heirlooms. There are cultivars that dates back to over one hundred years that are still produced today. Most heirloom varieties are different in color, size and shape. Some varieties are black, red with black shoulders, dark purple, rainbow and green. In terms of size, some are the size of a cherry to larger varieties weighing over 2 lb. Heirlooms - a story Some heirloom varieties have interesting histories as well; at least I think so. Lets talk about the story of a heirloom name Mortgage Lifter. A radiator repair shop owner, Charlie, experienced hard times, as did much of the nation through the Great Depression. Because of financial reasons, most people abandoned their cars and Ol Charlie’s business too a hard hit. He decided to use his four largest fruit producing tomato plants to cross breed repeatedly with each other to create a plant that produced two pounds of fruits. Claming that his plants could feed a family of six, Charlie peddled the crops for a dollar per plant. Within four years, Charlie generated enough money to pay off the $4,000 dollars mortgage on his home, which led to the heirloom name “Mortgage Lifter.” Heirlooms - names & origins In general, the names of heirloom varieties links directly to their history. For example, the Baptiste family in Remis, Fance cultivated the First Pick variety. Picardy’s history also dates back to France (1890). Besser arrived from the Freiburg section of Germany, while Schellenburg’s Favorite came from the Schellenburg family near Manheim, Germany. Elbe was cultivated in 1889 near the Elbe River in Germany. Since the 1870s, the Amish in Pennsylvania cultivated the Amish Paste variety. Brandywine was also cultivated by Amish farmers near Brandywine Creek in Chester County Pennsylvania in 1885. The hills of Virginia is thought to be the origin of the Hillbilly variety. Old Virginia was cultivated in Virginia as well in the early 1900s. In 1953 Campbell Soup Co., introduced the Ace variety which is still popular for canning. On Edgar Allan Poe’s estate, a cultivar found growing there bears his mother’s maiden name, Hopkins.
